"CONSUMERS FACE HIGHER INTERNET PRICES AND FEWER CHOICES UNDER TODAY’S FCC BROADBAND DEREGULATION DECISION" - Consumers Union  - 10/14/2004

Deregulation Will Stifle Telecom's Growth

It doesn't take an industry expert to conclude that the nation has undergone a communications revolution. To better serve our customers, we are doing all we can to promote open-access and competition that will deliver better, faster, more innovative services and strengthen the U.S. economy.

Our industry deserves telecommunication regulations that allow us the freedom to succeed or fail based on the quality of our services and the wisdom of our business plans. United, we are fighting for our right to compete in a fair and open market, even with monopolistic sized companies.

Benefits of preserving telecom policy established in the 1996 Telecom Act to our companies and our customers include:

Faster Delivery of Innovative Choices, Services and Value—Speeding the arrival of new voice, video and Internet products that enhance daily business operations and offer new growth opportunities.
Modern Communications Networks—Ensuring strong, reliable networks for all who depend on them that are also capable of delivering exciting broadband-based technologies and other promising innovations.
Securing Consumer Safeguards Amid a Technology Sea Change— Requiring all telecom competitors to commit to stabilizing universal service, upholding 911 and other law enforcement and public safety needs, and preserving access for persons with disabilities.

Without Regulation, jobs will lost, the economy will suffer, consumers will lose choice and real competition in the telecommunications industry will evaporate.
